Waiting for Uttarayan in Ahmedabad

Ever January, during the festival of Uttarayan (this is how Makar Sankranti is more commonly called in Gujarat) thousands of kites cloud the sky of Ahmedabad.

The biggest weapons besides the best made kites are the strong thread, which here is known as dori, coated with rice starch and glass to cut the competitors. Here are a few pictures of the preparation necessary to ensure that one's kite is the winner.
