Heavenly in Pushkar

by Annalisa Merelli

Pushkar is full of restaurants. Cafés, bars, german bakeries with (more or less) inviting signs are everywhere. Promises of delicious exotic food - Israeli and Italian on top of the list - fill the menus of any small joint.

Just so you know, most of them are going to turn out to be a massive disappointment: the average quality of the food, service, ambiance across town isn't great. But there are exceptions, and our favourite of them is a rooftop restaurant called The Sixth Sense, inside the Seventh Heaven haveli (they like their ordinal numbers, yes).

The first good thing about the restaurant is the haveli it's in, Seventh Heaven, also known as possibly the best place to stay in town. It gets booked out very easily, so call well in advance if you want your room there. Seventh Heaven is tastefully renovated, with no pastel colour walls nor fake traditional paintings to decorate the walls. The looks is sober: white walls, dark wood, big plants.

If you can't find a room there, you can always enjoy the haveli from the rooftop restaurant. The food is good - much better than we found anywhere else - but the atmosphere is the real winner. The ambience is simple yet refined, and the rooftop is open on all sides - one of which overlooks the Mali temple, which so close you are be able to notice all the detail of the decoration.

If you aren't too hungry skip the main courses and go straight to the desserts: they are all fresh and take about 45 minutes to be ready, but you won't even notice how long that is while you are sipping your hot lemonade and reading a book. If instead you are in for a proper meal have a thali: this is one of the few places in town where you can enjoy a good one.

A final tip: on your way out, don't forget to check out the boutique on the ground floor. It has a nice collection of ethnic garments and home accessories plus, confirming the fact that Pushkar can be a good place for fashion, we found a whole collection of Zadig & Voltaire's cotton shirts for a fraction of their price in shops, which are not to be missed.
