The first thing that strikes you about Spars Lodge in Shimla is how homely and welcoming it looks. Edge a little closer and the smell of freshly smoked trout hits you, and right after nothing seems as enticing as the whiff of the warm apple cinnamon pie, stealthily sneaking out of that kitchen window.
Spars Lodge is hidden away from the world, yet it is just a fifteen minute walk from the mall, conveniently located between the main town, the Vice Regal Lodge and a stone’s throw away from the State Museum. The entrance opens out to an eating space that is made in the attic itself, full of sunshine, a fireplace and a shelf of books. With just eight bright and spanking clean rooms, personalized service and fantastic food, and surprisingly affordable, the place is a traveller's paradise.
The food served in the cozy attic is delicious: the smoked trout is unmissable, the wood fired pizza is baked to perfection, the potato salad has just the right amount of cream, the apple pie is a treat, and the ice tea is wonderfully refreshing. The service is excellent, the staff is warm and hospitable.
They also let you carry your own alcohol, something that one doesn’t find in many restaurants, which makes it the perfect spot for a nice, lazy afternoon where you can eat, drink, read, ponder, chat or do whatever you like, because it is as informal as your own living room, only with better food and ambience.
