Heritage hotel in Amritsar

by Annalisa Merelli

Ranjit's Svaasà is a heritage boutique hotel - a rare, if not unique sight in Amritsar - hosted in one of the oldest surviving havelis of the city.

Before converting it into a hotel, the Mehra family has been living in the haveli for at least seven generations, and the place still feels like an ancestral home rather than a hotel.

Talking to the Mehra family - always busy around the hotel - and playing with the beautiful resident dogs makes the experience warm and personal, but unfortunately the family-run style also means that sometimes the service can be a bit slow. Also, not all the personnel is a good source of suggestions for what to do (or where to eat) around town: ur advice is to speak directly with Vishal Mehra (the PR director) if you want to get the best out of your time in Amritsar: he is definitely the best source of suggestions and solutions in the hotel.

Remarkably, Ranjit's Svaasà's management shows a liking for anything organic, and they offer everything from organic food (they grow their own vegetables and use them to cook lunch and dinner) to organic products (ayurvedic dietary supplements, organic cotton towels and much more) to a great spa - the time spent there is probably going to be the highlight of the whole experience.

COMMENTS

"We stayed here in February 2009 and had a good two days. The management are eager to please and we found them friendly; the Golden Temple is very special of course. I recall with amusement my hibiscus puree shower and an excellent full body massage. Nice people. There are photos in my gallery dated 2009 including Deluxe Delhi."
