If you are stuck in Chennai post meetings and have the irrational desire of a spot of adventure, then we have one word for you: surf.
Gather you swim gear, brush up on your ocean swimming skills and head to the Kallialay Surf School. Located at the laid back Banyan beach community just outside of Pondicherry, it's one of the first schools of its kind in the subcontinent.
Its name means "Rock Waves” in Tamil, and it's taken from the two rock jetties that create perfect water conditions for surfing novices. The sand bar formation here makes for varied wave breaks that are consistent, predictable and safe.
The school is the brainchild of brothers Juan and Samai Reboul, who have been surfing in these waters for 14 years, learning from surfing veterans along the coast. Juan and Samai offer private lessons, surf camps and package deals for five to ten lessons, the minimum needed for a novice to aspire to carve his way slickly through the pewter waters.
Owning a surf board is not necessary as they come with the classes, or you can rent one if you don't need lessons.
Enjoy.
