Bangalore was once known for its salubrious climate, clean air and a coat of green. Today, as the city grapples under the weight of growth, one wonders how much green will survive the next 20 years.
Worried about the change, a group of friends decided to do their part to bring a solution. They began volunteering their time to plant trees and raised their voices against the culling of city trees, trying to create awareness in the citizens.
The next step for Athreya Chidambi, Reena Chengappa, Shailesh Deshpande and Sriram Aravamudan was conceptualizing “My Sunny Balcony”, a collective of "garden enthusiasts" (as they like to define themselves) dedicated to creating customized landscapes for urban environments.
The four friends took their artistic, technical and managerial experience to a fresh dimension, and, with My Sunny Balcony, they aspire to take their sustainable designer concept gardens into balconies, terraces, corridors, and even elevators, converting drab, dark, grey spaces to sunny spots.
So this is how it works: the team does a through site visit to check sunshine patterns, microclimate in the area, and then goes about designing a garden plan, theme and direction for the space. The price tag of each project depends on the elements of the assignment. So far the team, which just started in the early part of this year, has done various themes; from Zen to English, from Indian heritage to Mexican, “My Sunny Balcony” makes the space yours, your dream – your garden.
My Sunny Balcony invariably finishes its work in a day, given the tight city schedules of its clients. The make over makes a great gift for birthdays, anniversaries or simple old-fashioned surprises.
And, for those who worry about not having a green thumb the My Sunny Balcony team has thought of that too, working with clients to provide maintenance and upkeep service as well.
Create a magical serene space to enjoy with your early morning cup of tea. Come back from a hectic day to rejuvenate your senses with the hum of water and gentle sounds of wind chimes amidst the green.
Call them Bangalore.
