Mud and jewels in Bangalore

by Amulya Nagaraj

Pottery Town, a little town in the northeast of Bangalore, is famous for its offerings of mud. The place is mostly famous as the origin of all the Ganesh idols during the festival, as well as lamps, pots, decorative pieces and good luck charms.

Acouple of months before the Ganesh festival, the settlement gets busy in making the idols of various sizes, all hand made and hand painted. Each idol is created with immense care, despite the fact that they will all be immersed and destroyed in water a couple of months later.

The idols are created through a mold, baked and dried, hand-painted individually and sold in the markets.

Each artisan has a specific way of working. And the woman there, despite working for hours in the mud, do not give up their love for jewelry, sporting gold pieces even while kneading and playing with mud.

Here are a few photos of how the idols are made and the other offerings the town has to offer.
