Camp Red Stone

by Madhavi Karunakaram Guha

Camp Red Stone is in Mahendarpur, close to Dehradun, at an altitude of three thousand feet, and spreads across 20 acres of uneven ground surrounded by mountains.

The Song river meanders through the site, and there’s also a manmade water body that doubles as a swimming pool during the summer months. The camp offers many activities, including adventure sports like rippling, rafting and rock-climbing, but what you absolutely can't miss is the hike to the sulphur cave.

It's a 10 km moderate hike, with an average to high-level gradient. After an hour and half of huffing and puffing through loose gravel and dangerous hairpin bends, you will finally reach a cement road. Then will have to climb a final stretch of rocky mountain to reach the cave. The entrance to the cave is small enough to fit only one person, and that too side-ways. Also, it is recommended that no more than three people should be inside the cave at a time to avoid suffocation and a stampede!

You'll have to enter on all fours, plus the rocky floor is filled with ankle-deep water and the ceiling drips just like many houses during the monsoons, so by the time you get in, you’ll  pretty much be drenched. Once inside, the cave opens up into something that looks like a giant, hungry alien’s mouth; it is pitch dark, so the view is restricted to the area that can be illuminated by flashlights. It’s a weird and creepy experience, but strangely, quite an enjoyable one at that. You’ve got to go to be there to feel it.

The hike back is smooth as compared to the rocky uphill journey, and if you are staying at the Camp Redstone, there will be a delicious hot, spicy meal waiting for you there.
