For the sandwich eaters of Delhi

by Annalisa Merelli

There are a few things that one may have problems finding in Delhi. It's totally possible to live a happy life without most of them, but something that one would end up wanting real badly every now and again is a good sandwich.

And because that happens to us quite often, a while ago we started a quest for the perfect sandwich in the capital city. Now, making a good sandwhich isn't as easy as it may seem, we all know that, but it also isn't rocket science. Though, for some reason, so many times we've found ourselves at first incredibly excited at the prospect of having fresh sandwiches for lunch and then horribly disappointed by the chewy consistence of the bread, or by the old salad. It is indeed pretty surprising how wrong a sandwich can go.

Our search hasn't been easy, but, finally, we've found something we are happy to cross town for when we want to reward ourselves with a good lunch break. Here's our verdict, after all the comparisons and evaluations: we think the best sandwiches (and possibly the best bread as well) in town are served at the Hyatt Regency's bakery, in Bhikaji Cama Place.

When you go there, set your standards high - we are talking about very expensive sandwiches after all. Don't settle for any of the sandwiches on display, but ask for a freshly made one (which will take, as the waiter will tell you, "about eight minutes"). Also, the options available normally go beyond what's displayed under the glass counter, so be sure to explore them before you make your choice.

We recommend the brie sandwich with multigrain bread or the Parma ham sandwich: the bread is very good, cheese and ham just as you wish they were, the salad fresh and the dressing just enough. All about those sandwiches is just comfortably right - no surprises, no disappointments.

Now, if only they delivered.
