With a reputation for having the best kulfi in Delhi, Kuremal Kulfi is a destination for dessert lovers that falls off the beaten path but is well worth the effort.
As you enter Sita Ram Bazar and weave through the alleys you may come to find that the official shop is almost always closed, but as soon as you ask neighboring shop keepers about Kuremal Kulfi, one of the members of this family business is sure to overhear and invite you for a tasting.
What started off as a one man push cart with mango and plain rabi kulfi in 1908 is now a full family business that sells over 50 flavours including custard apple, mango, guava, pomegranate, fig, rose, tamarind, falsa and green mango. Given the variety, it can be hard to decide which treat to try, but the one of the members of the family business is always on hand to make suggestions and explain some of the more unique flavors. The founders grandson, Anil Sharma, recommends the stuffed kulfi, a specialty that is hard to find anywhere else in Delhi: a mango is hollowed out and filled with creamy, plain kulfi and then left to freeze. Then the fancy, frozen fruit is peeled and sliced to reveal a perfect combination of dense, creamy kulfi and sweet, syrupy mango.
If after the stuffed kulfi you feel adventurous, try some of their other specialty flavors; a personal favorites are the bright green mango kulfi with its peppery zing and the smooth gulkand-flavored kulfi (rose petal jam) which has just the right amount of sweet flavor. The top seller is still the rabbi kulfi, one of the original flavors when the business started over 100 years ago.
An essential part of the fun of visiting the shop is discussing the history of the shop as the Kuremal family will enthusiastically share stories, suggestions and even recipes, so be sure to plan to spend some time enjoying your dessert.·
