Dakshin means south. And Dakshin is also synonymous with what's possibly the best southern Indian food in Delhi.
On the first floor of the Hotel Sheraton in Saket, Dakshan is a small heaven for lovers of south Indian food. The ambiance and service are up to the standard of a five star hotel, of course, but that becomes a detail compared to the fundamental reason one would want to stop by for lunch or dinner: the food.
Dakshin is the typical place where you'd happily let someone else order for you: the thick menu is rich of dishes from all the southern regions of India, and it's easy to get lost in. Our advice is to (always!) start with a meen pollichyadu (fish wrapped in banana leaves) and then let the waiter guide you through the choice of the rest of your dinner. Alternatively, you can make sure to invite a south Indian friend for dinner there and let him pick his favourite specialities.
The fish and prawn curries are heavenly, so are the vegetables and daals. The meat is also good, but we strongly recommend giving the chicken a miss and taking advantage of one of the few place serving great fish in Delhi.
Two more advices. Number one: the chutneys they serve before the meal are absolutely delicious; it's not easy, but try hard not to get full on those (it's happened to us more than once).
And number two: even if you normally prefer other breads, order the appams. It's one of the main reasons we keep going there: slightly sweet and totally delicious, you will find yourself devouring more than one even without any accompaniment.
