Home > Eat + Drink > Pit stop in Khatauli

Driving from Delhi up to Dehradun takes from five to countless hours depending on traffic, road, and uncountable Indian factors. If you are very lucky, there is no need to stop on the road more than once - and that one time has to be at Cheetal Grand, in Kathauli.
Not to be confused with Cheetal, a disappointing establishment that comes just before on the way, Cheetal Grand is an institution amongst hill-goers. Stopping for a cup of a great masala chai or a snack is a tradition, and there is a reason for it.
First of all, there is the food: our favourite is the cheese and tomato sandwich (with fries), which is just as crunchy and buttery as it should be on a road trip, but the samosas and items on the breakfast menu are very good too. Then there is the pretty - if a little odd - garden, which comes so unexpected given the surroundings. And finally there's the extra bit of entertainment provided by the (probably unintentionally) funny signs, the motorcycle in the centre of the hall and the cages full of birds, included some very exotic Japanese chickens.
Add to the mix the fast, efficient service and the news stand round the corner that sells international publications and you'll have no reason not to become one of the many who is happy to wait in line, on a crowded day, for a break at Cheetal Grand.
So as one of the sign says, leave the birds alone and enjoy your chai in the garden.
