Tucked above one of Hauz Khas Village's narrow gullies is the new Southeast Asian joint Lah. With a bright green interior and a disclaimer on the wall that promises good-but-not-necessarily-authentic food, Lah is a great spot for lunch or a relaxed weeknight dinner with friends.
Despite its claims against authenticity, the food at Lah is very good. Owner and head chef Anisha Maker has put together a solid menu which provides a great sampling of dishes from Thailand, Indonesia, and Malaysia – regional cuisines that have been lacking in Delhi.
As a starter, we sampled the Indonesian corn cakes with sambal, a fried chilli and shrimp based condiment. The corn cakes were perfectly fried and delicious on their own, but got a nice tangy kick from the sambal. As an accompaniment we had the vegetarian clear soup, which was perfectly seasoned with strong notes of galangal and lemongrass.
For main dishes, we ordered the Malay curry with chicken and the vegetarian nasi goreng, or Indonesian fried rice. The Malay curry was phenomenal, with perfectly tender chunks of chicken in a delicious coconut-based curry laced with karipatta. The nasi goreng was well-seasoned and had that just-greasy-enough quality that all good fried rice has. All of the dishes were nicely presented, artfully arranged in solid stoneware.
The meal was rounded off with some strong, super-sweet Vietnamese iced coffee, and we left happily satiated. Of the several new restaurants that have been popping up in Hauz Khas Village lately, this is definitely one that warrants many repeated visits!
