Photography is meant to be shared. "Blindgirls", the upcoming event at the new art space the Greenhouse in Hauz Khas, will be exactly about that. Remember the Blindboys? They are organising the event, and true to their spirit, it will showcase of photography from Asian women photographers doing documentary, photojournalism and visual story-telling, and also be an occasion for women photographers in Delhi to bring their prints on the day of the event to be hung for all to see.
Fifteen female photographers from all over Asia will have their work shown in an exhibition curated by Yumi Goto that features photographers such as Jean Chung from South Korea, Gali Tibbon from Isreal and Suruchi Dumpawar from India. The focus of their work varies from the atrocities of war to everyday life, all from the unique perspective of women whom are often the minority of photographers in Asia and across the rest of the globe. Delhi based photographers such as Mansi Midha, known for her commitment to socially conscious documentary projects, and Madishetty Manasa, whose street photos capture life in Delhi from a local's perspective, will be among the six Delhi based photographers who will have their work on the walls.
Past Blindboys events have always stressed the importance of innovative presentation, always pushing the definition of "art shows" and holding events called "Blow-ups" that invite artists to abandon the gallery and hang their work on the streets. It only makes sense that they decided to partner up with the newest innovative art community on the scene, the Greenhouse art space in Hauz Khas.
Supported by the Goethe Institute, the Greenhouse boasts to be "a hybrid space at the intersection of new cultural activity, alternative education and market dynamics." Opening in late 2010, the house has so far hosted a myriad of artsy events including make-a-thons such as "What's Your Type?," playing with lettering and typography and a "I love small books," a workshop where participants created their own books using a variety of made and found materials. Spectators are transformed into participants in this space where artists, creators, teachers and students come together.
The Blindgirls event is a chance for female photographers to bring their version to Delhi in a fun environment where sharing is encouraged, so whether you come with prints of your own to hang or just an interest in seeing the show, be sure to keep your mind and eyes open.
